About

What is Bunkara? We get that question a lot, and do not expect many people to know because we only found out when Dan was perusing an old map of Colorado.

Bunkara, or Bunkara River, is one of the original names of the Colorado River, specifically the section passing through Palisade and Grand Junction. Prior to its current name, the Colorado River had a few names such as the Blue River, the North Fork of the Grand River, the Rio San Rafael River, and of course, the Bunkara River. In 1921, President Warren G. Harding signed a resolution to change the name to the Colorado River and here we are!

Our Story

Erica, Dan, and Wyatt are zero-generation farmers. They have no farming in their family, have never run a farm, and are terrified. That being said, they have the motivation and spirit to make it work and are here to make the best of this adventure, provide the best possible flowers for you and your family, and have as much fun as they can while doing it.

Erica runs the show here. She is a healthcare professional, spending more than a decade in sports medicine as an Athletic Trainer, most recently in pediatric orthopedics at Children’s Hospital Colorado and now doing grown-up Athletic Training at Community Hospital in Grand Junction. Over the last few years, she has tended to numerous personal flowering projects, where she’s learned her love for them. A year-long growing trial period in Golden, Colorado was surprisingly successful and round two started in Grand Junction, where water and sun are plentiful.

Dan does the boring background stuff and takes the science and manufacturing of growing very seriously. He is an engineer with a wide range of experience including aerospace, NASCAR racecar design, intellectual property, NASA stuff, and advanced modular home manufacturing. He also runs a small media and consultancy company called WheelBased, where he writes publicly about bike-industry intellectual property. Really exciting stuff…

Wyatt, who might actually come out of this as a farmer, has a background in being the cutest kid in the world. With vast experience in sprinting, screaming, ice cream eating, and destroying flowers — he is a constant expense at the farm, and we love him with every bit of our being.
